ABA – Applied Behaviour Analysis
What is ABA?
A field of psychology that focuses on learning theories for people in different situations. For children on the Autism Spectrum an ABA program can break down specific things into small tasks. The focus can be on life skills – dressing, eating, cleaning etc. Each drill may be repeated over and over until achievement is made. Each stage of the learning is reinforced with reward and encouragement while negative or unacceptable behavior is ignored or modified.
This is a one-on-one program that may involve many therapists following the program/drills outlined by the psychologist in charge of the program. Each program is tailored to each child and their strengths and or challenges/deficits that need to be addressed. It is important that all people in contact with the child follow the basic guidelines of the program to ensure continuity.
